Quadriplegia

Quadriplegia is caused by damage to the spinal cord. This injury causes the victim to lose the use of the four limbs. It is also termed as tetraplegia and both means “paralysis of four limbs.”

Quadriplegia is frequently the result of a serious spinal cord injury caused by an accident or an act of violence. Car accidents are the leading cause of quadriplegia but paralysis resulting from violence such as gunshots is on the rise. Falls and sports-related injuries also lead to quadriplegia.

About 11,000 people are afflicted with spinal cord injuries of which 47% lead to quadriplegia. Roughly 250,000 Americans are paralyzed due to this.

There are two types of quadriplegia namely the complete and incomplete. In a complete quadriplegia, there is a total loss of sensation and bodily function below the injury level while incomplete quadriplegia is characterized by a partial loss. Of the two, the incomplete type happens more frequently.

Quadriplegia may also be caused by poliomyelitis. It may be attributed to metabolic diseases like the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis as well.

Any person who has suffered a spinal cord injury should get a legal evaluation as soon as possible after the accident. The legal consultation is critical because you need to find out what help you may be entitled to. Even an accident that appears to be no one's fault could still result in a recovery. Since the injuries are so severe, the damage claims will often exceed the amount of available insurance coverage. The injured person needs an intelligent, investigative attorney who will find all coverage and who is able to devise theories to involve other parties potentially at fault for the injury. For example in the case of a violent crime, the victim may be able to recover from the owner of the property for failure to provide adequate security.

Insurance companies and negligent parties may provide substantial compensation for injuries in many of these instances. People who are injured from a negligent act have the right to legal assistance. Medical bills, compensation for pain and suffering and lost income may be demanded as damages.

In cases when there is adequate insurance coverage, more incentive will be given to the company to fight the claims. An experienced trial attorney will be needed. Case time is critical. As time goes on, you may lose some of your rights, such that it will greatly help your case if evidence collection is made immediately after the accident happened. When you have a Quadriplegia due to an auto accident, get tuned to for assistance.
