Truck Kills 2 People, 12 Others Hurt

April 12, 2009

Los Angeles - A truck lost control and crashed into a bookstore killing two people while injuring 12 others on Wednesday afternoon, according to an Associated Press report.

Police report said the truck has lost control in a busy intersection and hit several cars before smashing into a bookstore and then plowed through nearby establishments including a coffee shop, liquor store, and nail salon.

In an interview, Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Mike Brown said nine people, including the truck driver, have sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene of the accident.

Brown said the truck driver lost control when he failed to make a sharp turn down the highway.

A waitress from a coffee shop said she heard her manager shouting at the customers to immediately get out of the way as the speeding truck was fast approaching to the building.

Meanwhile, city officials have long been complaining to the Department of Transportation in California to put warning signs to prevent such accident from happening again. Last September, a truck also lost control in the same intersection which left one person injured and damaged seven cars.

“The Department of Transportation has long been ignoring our request to make the intersection safer and we are infuriated because of this”, Mayor Laura Olhasso said in an interview.

Meanwhile, the department’s officials were not available to give comments.
