The Road Battleground: Vehicles vs. Pedestrian In our fast-paced world, people have always relied on everything instant and quick. We see instant food, fast access to information (the television and the internet) and of course, faster transportation vehicles. These have all been very useful to all of us and have made all our lives easier. Fast and reliable! We have always depended on transportation vehicles such as cars, trucks, buses, trains, etc. We know that we can get to work on time, attend meetings or visit the malls in a jiffy. Surely, these vehicles have become part of our lives and everyday existence. But then comes the phrase, “with great power comes great responsibility”. Being on the road tells us that we are accountable for other people’s welfare as well. When we drive our cars, we are not only putting ourselves exposed but also the lives of the people that we meet. A lot of accidents occur on the road because of a lot of factors. Can you remember the time that you are such in a hurry trying to beat a red traffic light because you are late for work that you were not able to see or worst, even totally ignored the people crossing the streets? Chances are, you can cause an injury or harm to the people you did not give attention to. In some instances, the drivers even leave these helpless pedestrian to die. The intentional disregard of traffic rules and regulations is probably one of the most common factors of these pedestrian accidents. Some even drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Most drivers feel that they are the “king of the road” and that there are no rules for them to follow. Most of the time, these drivers found themselves in accidents wherein they also hurt innocent bystanders and pedestrians. Because of this insensitivity, many innocent lives are put into danger. Pedestrians should always be given priority by motor vehicles on pedestrian crossings and not the other way around. However although it is evident that the drivers have a big responsibility in their hands, it is also important to say that those crossing the streets should play their part as well. Pedestrians are always advised to observe pedestrian rules. They should cross only at the proper places and be cautious in doing so to ensure the safety of their journey. So remember to always take precautionary measures while on the road, whether you are the driver or the pedestrian. The road is a very big battleground that we do not know when chaos could strike. It is best to have the necessary armour to keep us safe and away from harm at all times.
