Spinal Cord Injuries

The Major Bundle of Nerves

Spinal Cord Injury is the damage to the spinal cord that results to loss of functioning such as the person’s mobility or feelings. Among the common causes of spinal cord injuries are injuries resulting from trauma in automobile accidents, gunshots, slip and fall and certain diseases.  The spinal cord does not have to be broken in order for a loss of functioning to occur since in most cases, the spinal cord is intact, but the damage has already resulted in the loss of functioning of the victim.

The spinal cord is the major nerve bundle that carries nerve impulses to and from the brain to the rest of the body. The brain and the spinal cord constitute the Central Nervous System.  Motor and sensory nerves outside the Central Nervous System constitute the Peripheral Nervous System, and another diffuse system of nerves that control involuntary functions such as blood pressure and temperature regulation are the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Nervous Systems.

Statistics on Spinal Cord Injuries

Close to 11,000 individuals in the U.S. have suffered serious and traumatic spinal cord injuries from automobile accidents, with over 200,000 people diagnosed to be having similar disabilities resulting from other causes. According to statistics, half of the victims are between the ages of 16 and 30 years old with more males than females having a ratio of four to one.  It also showed that the most common cause of spinal cord injuries is motor vehicle crashes, contributing to at least 35 percent of these injuries.
