Car Accident: Nurse carjacked while aiding crash victim
April 13, 2010
Los Angeles - A nurse was carjacked while trying to help an accident victim near the gas station in Pico Boulevard on Sunday.
The nurse, whom Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has not yet identified, was filing up on gas around 3 a.m. when she saw a car hit a traffic signal pole, and it fell on the man. She left the keys in her car, and rushed to give medical aid to the victim, Officer Carlos Ortega said.
A woman, whom LAPD identified as Deserie Marie Guzman, hopped into the nurse's car and started the engine. The nurse hurled back to her car to grab the keys, but was dragged about 60 feet, fell, hit her head on the pavement, and blacked out.
"I don't know if she was holding on, trying to turn the car off or got stuck on the steering wheel and couldn't get loose. She wasn't clear on that because she was knocked out," Ortega said.
Ortega said that Guzman drove away, but after a mile, collided with another car near Western Avenue. She tried to walk away, when two men offered her a ride.
"They didn't see the first incident and thought she was trying to flee the scene of the accident. So they wanted her to think they're helping her out," he said.
The two men tried to take her to a California Highway Patrol (CHP) station, but it was closed. They drove back to the accident scene, where they flagged down police, who arrested Guzman.
CHP officers also arrested Jasen Jack, 27 years old, who caused the first accident. He was charged of driving under the influence of alcohol.
The pedestrian suffered fatal injuries. The nurse was currently treated of her minor injuries.
