Fiery Rollover Crash Kills 7-Year-Old Boy, Injures Family

San Leandro – Some family members who were trapped inside an SUV that rolled over Wednesday were injured while one of the children, a 7-year-old boy died from serious head injuries, the California Highway Patrol said.

There were at least six occupants of the vehicle including the boy’s mother, two of his teen siblings, and a 2-year-old child who was strapped on a car seat. The baby was reportedly unharmed.

The boy was reportedly on the rear luggage compartment with one of his teen brothers when the unidentified driver of the SUV lost control on the westbound lanes of Interstate 580.

Witnesses said the vehicle rolled over at least once and that the boy was pinned underneath when it came to a stop.

Motorists who passed by the crash immediately assisted the victims and got them to safety before the SUV caught fire.

Identities of all parties involved were not released pending further investigation.
