Drunken Teen in a Stolen Car Chased by Police
July 9, 2009
Carlsbad — The California Highway Patrol (CHP) chased down and shot a 14-year old boy with a taser when he tried to flee after he got pulled over for a traffic violation on early Thursday morning.
Officers say that the boy was driving a stolen car and was also under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The car was reportedly stolen out of Vista and the teenage driver was identified as an at-risk runaway.
According to CHP Officer Eric Newbury, the officers first spotted the boy who was driving a 2000 Toyota Corolla south on Carlsbad Boulevard and that they tried to pull him over for a traffic violation. He pulled over but put the car in gear as he and a passenger jumped out and ran towards the beach.
The car continued moving down the road but it was stopped by a patrol car. Officers who pursued the teen and his passenger, shot the 14-year old driver with a Taser at the top of a staircase leading to Taramack beach. He fell and hit his head on the pavement and was taken to a hospital.
The passenger, who fled south toward the jetty was not found by the officers even after a perimeter was formed around the area.
The 14-year old will be facing several charges such as possession of a stolen vehicle, driving under the influence and evading arrest.
