Daiso Faces another Product Recall

October 13, 2009

Washington D.C. – At least 430 defective wooden toys were recalled from Daiso California LLC, a toy company based in Burlingame, California, because of choking hazard. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced yesterday.

Penguin Handbell, Pull Doll, Alligator Pull Toy and Rolling Animals were recalled because the small parts of these toys, which apparently break down and detach easily, are hazardous to young children who may choke if these parts are accidentally placed inside the mouth.

The toys were made in China and sold at $1 to $4 inDaiso stores located in California since December 2008 to May this year. They were sold between $1 and $4.

CPSC advised consumers not to allow children to use the recalled toys because of the health hazards. The agency also urged consumers to contact the toy company for product exchange or full refund.

Recently, there were also 130 toys, purses and pencil cases recalled by Daiso because of reported high content of lead paint and they exceeded the phthalate limits.

Lead can cause brain and nerve damage, behavioral and learning problems, slow development, hearing problems, headaches, mental and physical retardation and other health problems. It can also cause cancer and reproductive problems. Phthalate also cause reproductive problems like lower sperm cells, infertility and reproductive tract malformation.
