Bausch & Lomb Wins in Product-related Lawsuits

August 31, 2009

Bausch & Lomb, a US company that manufactures eye health products, has recently won in a product-related class action lawsuit filed by consumers claiming that MoistureLoc, the company’s popular contact lens cleaner, was the cause of a non-fungal infection.

In a court decision, the federal judge in South Carolina said there is no scientific basis that will prove the claims of more than a thousand consumers who said that they suffered from parasitic, viral, and bacterial infections after using the product.

In 2006, the company has also been charged with a class-action lawsuit over allegations that MoistureLoc promotes a fungal infection called Fusarium keratitis which can result to total blindness.

The optical maker settled its nearly 600 product-related lawsuits and spent more than $250 million settlement to pay for the damages.

In a statement, the company said it has fairly compensated consumers who suffered from eye infection caused by the contact lens cleaner. However, the firm said it will fight lawsuits and claims which have no scientific basis.

According to reports, seven people in the US have to undergo a complete eye removal while another 60 required to have a corneal transplant after contracting Fusarium while using the contact lens cleaner.
