PRODUCT RECALL: Amgen Recalls Epogen and Procrit due to Glass Flakes
September 24, 2010
Thousand Oaks – Amgen Inc. (AMGN) has recently announced the product recall of its Epogen and Procrit anemia treatment drugs due to glass flakes that may be found in some of its vials.
The recall will affect 200 lots of Epogen and 155 lots of Procrit; the two are the same drug but are sold under different names.
According to the Thousand Oaks- based biotechnology company, the glass flakes are caused by the long shelf life of the drug where the vials start to break down over time and glasses start chipping off into the liquid.
There have been no reports of any medical problems related to the product recall.
Amgen will also be changing the vials to be used in their drug and reduce its shelf life from 36 months to 12 months to avoid bottle erosion.
To check which vials are affected by the product recall, consumers are advised to check with the Epogen.
