The Job and Functions of an Accident Attorney

An accident attorney is the one who assesses the case, with all its complexities, for the benefit of his client.

The client, usually, is the one who was aggravated in an accident where injury was sustained. The usual site for an accident is obviously the road, where many of America’s states sport harsh numbers in terms of its occurrence rates.

Some of the common injuries sustained in a road accident are the following:

  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
  • Bone fracture
  • Bruises and scrapes
  • Burns
  • Whiplash injuries
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Internal decapitation

All of these accidents are potentially debilitating, if not fatal, to those who are unlucky enough to be involved in one. In addition, medical treatment for these injuries often requires finances which are not usually found in the pockets of the day-to-day citizen.

But an accident attorney does not only deal with physical injuries per se. He also deals with the deep-set effects of an accident, namely the following:

  • Loss of a loved one
  • Loss of working hours leading to wage loss
  • Potentially permanent impairments
  • Psychological effects

These effects can be regarded as those which are not “immediate,” meaning they are not easily seen without either the passage of time or sharp intuition and perception of damage assessors. This is in recognition of the fact that some of the damages take time to show, particularly those that fall under mental health together with some physical and economic damages.

The job of an accident attorney, therefore, is to intuitively weave the repercussions of the accident to the victim’s well-being, both in the present and in the future, and use them to give a specific demand for compensation against the case defendant. It usually takes only a settlement to fix a personal injury problem, but, sometimes, parties don not easily agree, so a full-blown and time consuming lawsuit will then take place.
