Los Angeles, California - The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said on Tuesday that the rate of fatal road accidents increased this holiday weekend compared to last year, adding that drunk driving still remains a major concern for authorities.
According to CHP report, 31 people were killed across California, including 10 in LA County. Last year’s Memorial Day celebration has 19 reported cases of fatal road accidents.
Meanwhile, there were 220 drunk drivers arrested, a slight decline compared to last year which has 204 reported cases in LA County. Across the state, police arrested almost 1,300 people believed to be driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), drunk driving crashes increase during holiday seasons, especially Christmas and New Year. With 36 fatal road accidents happening in the US every day, Christmas and New Year has fatalities of 79 and 90, respectively.
The CHP traffic accident report was conducted during the first 60 hours of holiday weekend and ended at 6 am on Monday.
