1 Million Strollers Recalled Over Risk of Finger Amputation

Nov. 9, 2009

Washington - US retail giants Target Corp. and Babies "R" Us have announced on Monday a massive recall that covers 1 million Maclaren strollers manufactured between 1999 and 2000 after 12 children have their fingers severed due to a defective hinge system.

In a statement, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said the recalled products include all nine models of single and double umbrella strollers which were manufactured in China.

According to CPSC investigations, all the accidental amputation happened when fingers were placed in the stroller’s hinge while it is being unfolded. When the hinge has locked into its place, the fingers were then cut off.

To prevent further accidents, the consumer agency warns parents to stop using the recalled strollers and immediately return these to the company which will provide free hinge covers.

CPSC said the hinge covers should not be removed unless the strollers will be cleaned.

The recalled strollers include the following models: and Easy Traveller, Quest Mod, Quest Sport, TechnoXLR, Techno XT, Triumph, Twin Techno, Twin Triumph, and Volo. These strollers were priced between $100 and $360.

Under federal law, companies are liable for any injuries and accidents caused by defective products and should announce a recall immediately after discovering a potentially dangerous defect.

Failure to recall and notify the consumer agency about a defective product is a ground for a lawsuit.
